Midsize SUV sales stayed firmly on an upward trajectory in May 2026 as the segment registered 1,17,332 units – recording a healthy 32.3 per cent year-on-year increase. Unlike several other passenger vehicle categories where a handful of products dominate volumes, the midsize SUV space continued to witness intense competition between Mahindra, Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, Kia, Toyota and Tata.
Mahindra emerged as the biggest winner overall – placing multiple products among the segment leaders while retaining the top spot through the Scorpio. Continuing its good run of form with 15,774 units, it moved up to first place despite growing by a relatively modest 9.5 per cent. Hyundai’s Creta followed in second with 15,235 units.
As has been the case in recent years, the five-seater remained the brand’s highest-selling SUV. While the gap between the two models stood at just over 500 units, both continued to lead a segment that is becoming increasingly crowded with new entrants and powertrain choices. The biggest disruption, however, came from Maruti Suzuki’s Victoris.

Registering 10,853 units, the SUV continued to be in the third position ahead of several established rivals. The model’s arrival has also consolidated Maruti Suzuki’s presence in a segment traditionally dominated by Hyundai and Mahindra. Kia and Maruti Suzuki posted some of the strongest growth numbers among mainstream players as well.
The Kia Seltos’ sales surged 74.2 per cent to 10,597 units while the Grand Vitara jumped 80.2 per cent to 9,366 units. The Mahindra XUV 7XO also continued gaining numbers by posting a healthy 45.1 per cent increase to 9,338 units. Toyota maintained steady volumes through the Hyryder which recorded 8,664 units and a 14.4 per cent improvement over May last year.
Further down the rankings, Mahindra’s born electric XEV 9S entered the list with 3,502 units. Tata Harrier delivered the biggest percentage gain among all models – soaring 214.9 per cent to 2,815 units. Another key takeaway was Mahindra’s dominance across multiple sub-segments. Scorpio, XUV 7XO and XEV 9S collectively contributed more than 28,000 units – giving the brand three entries within the top ten.
Maruti Suzuki followed with the Victoris and Grand Vitara while Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Tata and MG each featured one model. With multiple hybrid, petrol, diesel and electric options now available, the midsize SUV category remains the most important battlegrounds in the Indian PV market.
