Volkswagen, Nissan, and Renault to launch new mid-size SUVs by Diwali this year, further intensifying competition in the booming segment

The mid-size SUV segment has seen considerable activity in recent months, and this momentum is expected to continue throughout the year. No less than three new Hyundai Creta rivals are still on their way to arrive in showrooms this year.

1. New VW Taigun

The VW Taigun, launched in September 2021, has been long overdue for a facelift, and that refresh is finally arriving. Volkswagen plans to launch the new Taigun on 9 April. The new Taigun will feature substantial design changes at the front and rear, with the former set to take on the VW Tharu XR sold by the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture in China. Sleek headlamps connected via a daytime running light strip and an illuminated brand logo will give the front-end a much stronger look. Other key exterior changes would include new 17-inch alloy wheels, revised tail lamps, and restyled bumpers.

Inside, Volkswagen is likely to offer the new Taigun with new features such as a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a new rear seat with a massage function, a panoramic sunroof, and an updated 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Gemini-integrated voice assistant. A new, variable geometry compressor should improve cooling.

The Taigun’s engine options will remain unchanged, while the 6-speed automatic transmission will likely be replaced by an 8-speed unit, offering a fuel economy improvement of around 1 km/l.

2. Nissan Tekton

Later in April, Nissan will likely launch the Tekton, the successor to the Terrano, which it discontinued in 2020. The Nissan Tekton will be a mechanical cousin of the Renault Duster, but it will feature a bolder and more elegant exterior. Sharper headlamps and radiator grille, 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, and less aggressive bumpers are expected to be the key differences, leading to a more polished character.

The interior is likely to be largely similar to the Renault Duster. The engine options will be the same: 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol (99 hp/166 Nm) and 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol (161 hp/280 Nm). Both engines will be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, but a 6-speed dual wet clutch transmission will be available as an option with the latter.

3. Renault Duster Hybrid

Close to Diwali, Renault will likely launch the Duster Hybrid, making up for the absence of a diesel engine in the third-generation model. The company will use a 1.8-litre direct injection petrol engine producing 107 hp and 172 Nm of torque, two electric motors, including a drive unit and a starter/generator, and a 1.4 kWh battery in the Duster Hybrid.

Renault says customers will be able to drive the Duster Hybrid in EV mode up to 80% of the time in city conditions and save up to 40% in everyday use compared to a regular combustion engine. It claims the Duster Hybrid will have a total range of up to 1,000 kilometres.
