BYD Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid could be launched as a Honda ZR-V rival in June, with deliveries starting shortly after

After about a year and a half of local testing, the BYD Sealion 6 may finally be hitting Indian showrooms this summer. BYD has released a new teaser indicating the launch of a new plug-in hybrid model, which is most likely in reference to the Sealion 6.

The teaser says it will be “the end of” having to choose between “electric or petrol,” “range or silence,” and “power or efficiency”. In all likelihood, it hints at the BYD Sealion 6, which has been undergoing testing for a long time now and is available in petrol and petrol-electric plug-in hybrid variants internationally. Interestingly, BYD no longer sells this model in its home market, China, where it used to market it as the ‘Song Plus’.

The BYD Sealion 6 measures 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height and has a 2,765 mm wheelbase. Its plug-in hybrid variant is available in FWD and AWD versions with different engines, electric motor(s), and battery packs.

In Australia, for instance, there’s a 215 hp FWD version that comes with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, a front-mounted electric motor, and a choice of 18.3 kWh and 26.6 kWh LFP battery packs. The standard-range configuration hits 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds, while the extended-range configuration takes 8.9 seconds. The 18.3 kWh battery pack delivers an electric range of 92 kilometres (SOC 25%-100%), and the 26.6 kWh unit gives 140 kilometres (SOC 20%-100%), both as per NEDC. Both battery packs support charging at up to 6.6 kW (AC)/18 kW (DC) and a V2L charging function.

There’s also a 295 hp AWD version that upgrades to a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and adds a rear-mounted electric motor. The battery packs remain the same. The base configuration with the 18.3 kWh LFP battery pack accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and has an NEDC electric range of 81 kilometres (SOC 25%-100%). The top configuration with the 26.6 kWh LFP battery pack cuts the 0-100 km/h sprint time to 5.5 seconds and increases the NEDC electric range to 128 kilometres (SOC 20%-100%).

Which of the aforementioned configurations BYD is planning to offer in India has yet to be known. The company will likely equip the Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid with features such as 19-inch wheels, a power tailgate, a dual wireless smartphone charging pad, a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, 8-way (driver)/6-way (passenger) power front seats with ventilation and heating functions, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10-speaker Infinity audio system. A head-up display, a 360º camera system, seven airbags, and a long list of Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems are also expected.
